FlashDisk's Speed Translates to Cost Savings for University Organization Profile - www.scu.edu Santa Clara University, a private Catholic university in Northern California, can trace its beginnings to Mission Santa deAsis, one of several missions established in Mexican California during the 18th century. Today, this University's undergraduate division has more than 4,000 students enrolled in arts and sciences, business, and engineering; and a graduate and law school enrollment of 3,500 students. For the past 10 years, U.S. News & World Report Magazine has ranked Santa Clara University second among all regional universities in the West. FlashDisk Customer Profile As Told By Santa Clara University “Several years ago, the school's information technology (IT) department had some IBM RAID 5 arrays - a 7135 and a 7133 array. They didn't have the speed we needed. That's why we replaced the IBM disks with FlashDisks. We also looked at other vendors, such as Data General and EMC, but they couldn't deliver storage devices with comparable performance in the same price range as the FlashDisks. These vendors are comparable to the IBM. We now have three FlashDisks and another one on order. For the past six years, Winchester's FlashDisk, along with its upgrades, has been the Logistics IS department's sole storage resource. It has allowed us to get the most for our money, and to retain our computer system and software longer than we had anticipated. The FlashDisks provide RAID storage for the IT department's RS6000, which runs Informix on PeopleSoft. PeopleSoft is used for human resources, finance, and the student system, which is registration and student records. Performance is important to us because people have a job to do. If the system takes 10 minutes to do something, people have to waste 10 minutes waiting. Speed is money. When we first went to the FlashDisk, users noticed the difference in the speed of applications. We got good reviews. Also, the FlashDisk has made the data administration tasks that I do run twice as fast. It has made other tasks - doing backups and moving data to disk - run twice as fast. We've been pleased with our FlashDisks. Although RAID 5 isn't quite as fast as RAID 0 or 1, it's dramatically faster than any comparable RAID 5. The performance of the FlashDisks is excellent. The disks are very dependable. We've had only one power supply go out. It was our fault because we had an overheating issue. The next day Winchester provided us with a power supply.”
