FlashDisk Pumps Up Legacy Order Entry System for Systems Integrator

Organization Profile - www.primesource.com

Photographic Film. Film Processors. Light Tables. With annual sales of $500 million, PrimeSource, based in Seattle, Washington, is the leading United States distributor and systems integrator of hardware, software, and consumables for the pressroom-traditional and electronic prepress. The company's 30 distribution centers throughout the United States serve the printing, publishing, and graphic arts industries.

FlashDisk Customer Profile As Told By PrimeSource Corp.

“We looked at several storage devices to replace legacy Digital systems. We needed more speed to handle the online transactions for a legacy order entry system, written in a language called DIBOL. This system is a key part of the internal business system for the entire company.

Digital's Open StorageWorks was too expensive and the throughput was too slow. After comparing performance metrics from other vendors, we decided to go with the FlashDisk open RAID storage device from Winchester Systems.

We currently have FlashDisks running on a three-node, Alpha VMS cluster. The architecture of the FlashDisk is more advanced than the VAX storage. In fact, we went from 107 I/Os per second with the VAXes up to 2,650 I/Os per second with the FlashDisks. Most of this speed comes from the FlashDisks.

The reliability of the FlashDisks has been good. Every time we have had a problem, we've been able to trace it back to the VMS operating system or the Alpha firmware. Since Compaq doesn't support our configuration, we need to know that we can count on the FlashDisks and, at the same time, easily maintain our current hardware and legacy system.”
