Two years later, Golden Retriever incorporated as a full-service database management company, specializing in bankcard risk management services and custom merchant reporting. Today more than 30 major U.S. financial institutions depend daily on Golden Retriever's services for data distribution, including custom reporting of merchants' bankcard transactions. The four founders and VISA own this privately held company. The Merchant Information Delivery Systems (MIDS) is one of Golden Retriever's key services. It allows banks to provide its merchant customers with a faxed report of their credit card transactions. Tailored by each bank, the report may list the credit card transactions for a single day, week, or an entire month. Each report has the bank's logo, so merchants know their bank delivers a valuable service. FlashDisk Customer Profile As Told By Golden Retriever Systems “We've built a secure data warehouse to handle the MIDS application. Before the processing of reports can begin for the day, each morning we have to download data from a number of sources and then add that data to the data warehouse. The application calls for downloading as much as 10 GB per day, storing it for 90 days, and running queries against the data to produce as many as 10,000 reports a day. We just hammer away at the data warehouse all day. We built the warehouse on a Hewlett-Packard NetRAID system on a Windows NT network. After awhile, we were seeing collective download load times of up to four hours. That was unacceptable. A year ago, we overhauled the data warehouse by moving it onto two different Hewlett-Packard NetServer LH3s. Both servers run Windows NT SQL server. To decrease download time, we added a Winchester System's FlashDisk OpenRAID system to each server. I tested the new system by running a trial download. The database administrator said it didn't work. He argued that it couldn't have taken 15 seconds to download the trial data when it should have taken about 20 minutes. Then he ran a query and found that the data was there. That's when his mouth dropped. The FlashDisks have drastically cut the collective data warehouse download times from four hours to 30 minutes. This savings of time allows us to increase our capacity to handle more business.”
