RAID Array Capacity Increased 45% with
Low-profile Disk Drives

WOBURN, MA (June 1, , 1998) Winchester Systems Inc. announced a breakthrough capacity increase with their new 145.6-Gbyte FlashDisk® RAID Departmental and Enterprise disk arrays. These new FlashDisk RAID arrays feature low-profile 4.55 and 9.1 Gbyte disk drives in pedestal and rackmount enclosures that increase capacity by 45%.

The company's new FlashDisk RAID models now hold up to 16 low-profile disk drives in all-metal, low-profile disk carriers for a maximum storage capacity of 145.6 Gbyte in a single unit. The low-profile disk technology increases maximum storage capacity 45%, from 100.1 Gbyte using standard 3.5", disk drives to 145.6 Gbyte using 16 low-profile disk drives, in the same pedestal or rackmount enclosure with 9.1-Gbyte disk drives. The new low-profile disk carriers coupled with the low-profile drives enable more disk drives to fit in the same enclosure space.

“Low-profile drives increase the storage density available in a single RAID disk array, reduces the cost per megabyte and increases the performance with the use of the extra disk spindles,” according to Jerry Namery, the company's chief technical officer.

FlashDisk RAID disk array continues to support Ultra-SCSI host interfaces and Ultra-SCSI disk drives with up to 40 Mbytes per second data transfer rate to the host server for sequential data transfer. FlashDisk also continues to support up to 9,779 disk I/O operations per second for random access applications such as database inquiries, sorts and reports, which the company claims to be the highest available from a single RAID array.

FlashDisk is available for all popular mid-range servers including HP 9000, IBM RS/6000, SUN Sparc, Intel Pentium and Pentium PRO as well as Digital VAX and Alpha. A FlashDisk RAID pedestal enclosure with 16 low-profile 4.55-Gbyte drives with 72.8-Gbyte capacity is $28,739 or 39 cents per megabyte. Equipped with 16 low-profile 9.1-Gbyte drives, the FlashDisk cost is $45,592 for 145.6 Gbytes or only 31 cents per Mbyte. Delivery is two to four weeks.
