RAID Array Delivers 50 MB per second Sustained Data Rate

WOBURN, MA (August 21, 1998) Winchester Systems Inc. announced a breakthrough performance improvement for its Departmental and Enterprise FlashDisk RAID disk arrays to 50 megabytes per second using dual Ultra-SCSI host ports - a 50% improvement over their single host port models.

FlashDisk now utilizes two Ultra-SCSI host ports, Ultra-SCSI disk drives and a high-performance RAID controller to maximize the sustained data throughput. While many RAID arrays use Ultra-SCSI buses with 40 megabytes per second maximum throughput, FlashDisk with a single host port actually delivers 33 MB per second actual measured and sustained throughput on a single port to the host server. When connected to two host ports, FlashDisk RAID delivers an actual measured and sustained throughput of 50 megabytes per second.

“FlashDisk continues to provide unmatched performance levels to managers of mid-range servers. No other RAID array delivers even a fraction of our single port performance levels,” according to Mr. Jerry Namery, the company's chief technical officer.

FlashDisk has always been the performance choice in database and transaction oriented applications because of its industry leading 9,779 disk I/O operations per second performance for random access applications. Now FlashDisk also offers the highest throughput and this makes it ideal for sequential applications including video, imaging, backup, copying, file transfer and other large sequential file operations. Most mid-range server environments are a mixture of random and sequential access and now FlashDisk is the best at both. This makes it suitable for any disk intensive environment.

FlashDisk is available for all popular mid-range servers including HP 9000, IBM RS/6000, SUN Sparc, Intel Pentium and Pentium PRO as well as Digital VAX and Alpha. FlashDisk is available for workgroup, departmental and enterprise scale applications in capacities from 9 GB to well over 1,000 GB in tabletop, pedestal and rackmount enclosures. Prices range from 30 to 35 cents per megabyte depending upon configuration. A FlashDisk pedestal or rackmount model equipped with 16 low-profile 9.1 GB drives, dual Ultra-SCSI host ports and high speed RAID controller is $45,592 for 145.6 GB or only 31 cents per megabyte. With eleven 18.2 MB drives and 200.2 GB total capacity, FlashDisk is $63,033 or also 31 cents per megabyte. Delivery is two to four weeks.
