FlashNAS
Storage Appliance
Offers Data Recovery
and Cuts Backup
Time
Burlington,
MA. March 29,
2002 -
Winchester Systems
announced a family
of next generation
storage appliances
powered by Microsoft
Windows 2000 Server
Appliance software.
The high performance,
heterogeneous
network attached
storage devices
are called FlashNAS
and are offered
in three configurations:
FlashNAS
Model 1000
The
FlashNAS Model
1000 is a simple
and affordable,
yet feature-rich
storage appliance
that supports
up to 3 TB of
"plug and
play" network
attached storage
per unit for use
as a filer. It
is easy to deploy
and manage. FlashNAS
1000 attaches
to any Ethernet
port and is easily
setup from a browser
at any local or
remote station.
The FlashNAS Model
1000 includes
up to 250 snapshot
backups per volume
for up to 255
volumes. This
snapshot backup
capabilities offers
two significant
benefits:
(1)
Snapshot images
enable "point-in-time"
recovery of
lost or damaged
files.
(2)
Snapshot images
can be backed
up to tape,
thus eliminating
downtime for
backup.
Software
to establish and
managed disk capacity
quota policies
is included. The
FlashNAS 1000
server appliance
takes just 1U
of rack space.
Storage is housed
and priced separately.
FlashNAS
Model 2000
The
FlashNAS Model
2000 is a high
capacity, high
reliability model
that supports
up to 9 TB of
storage with two
Ethernet connections
in a 3U high server
appliance. For
high availability
and high performance,
the Model 2000
includes redundant
processors, internal
disk drives and
power supplies.
Model 2000 supports
up to six external
FlashDisk OpenRAID
disk arrays of
1.5 TB each. FlashDisk
performance is
rated at 13,000
I/O operations
per second and
121 MB per second
data throughput.
FlashNAS
Model 3000
The
FlashNAS Model
3000 is a dual
appliance cluster
for the utmost
in mission critical
availability.
It includes two
Model 2000 servers
plus clustering
software powered
by Microsoft.
The two servers
are configured
in an active/active
configuration
for maximum utility
during normal
operation with
a heartbeat connection
to detect a server
failure. In the
event a server
fails, the clustering
software enables
the surviving
server to take
over for the failed
server transparently
to the storage
users. The failed
server is easily
brought back on
line after being
repaired or replaced.
FlashNAS supports
Windows Common
Internet File
System (CIFS),
Network File System
(NFS) for UNIX
and Linux, Novell
Netware (CNP)
and Appletalk
Protocol (AFP)
file systems.
FlashNAS is compatible
with all open
system servers
including HP,
SUN, IBM, Intel
and MAC running
any operating
system including
UNIX, NT and Linux
with no host software
drivers needed.

1000 is priced
at $7,500, Model
