March 27, 2001) Winchester Systems Inc. announced that its ultra-high performance FlashDisk OpenRAID disk array is now available with fibre channel interfaces and delivers up to 121 MB per second data throughput using dual fibre ports. The FlashDisk product family will support both point-to-point fibre connections and switched fibre connections. FlashDisk OpenRAID for fibre channel is compatible with Brocade, QLogic, JNI and other popular fibre switches and host bus adapters and is SAN-capable and NAS-capable for experienced system integrators. Each FlashDisk OpenRAID fibre channel disk array will support two fibre channel ports using dual GBIC optical interfaces. The two fibre ports each support 1 Gbit data transfer rates and are upgradeable to 2 Gbit when available. All FlashDisk OpenRAID arrays, both fibre-based and SCSI-based, can be managed using the company's FlashConsole centralized storage management system to initialize, monitor and control all FlashDisk storage in the enterprise. Dual Port Capabilities FlashDisk may be connected to any combination of hosts, switches or SAN and NAS topologies as desired to achieve the connectivity and redundancy needed. The two fibre channel ports enable FlashDisk to be multi-hosted to two servers for sharing the storage or, with cluster-capable operating systems, to share the actual data. Alternately, both ports can be connected to separate host adapters on a single host server to provide nearly double the data rate - delivering up to 121 MB per second data throughput. The dual fibre channel port in FlashDisk also enables high levels of fault tolerance by providing failover paths using software such as Veritas Dynamic Multipathing (DMP) that make data accessible even if an entire fibre switch fails. "Open"
Architecture FlashDisk OpenRAID is a true hardware, plug-and-play storage solution, which emulates standard disks --eliminating proprietary host software, RAID managers and the need for software drivers or agents. It supports hardware RAID 1, 3, 5, 1+0 and RAID 15 for data protection. All components are redundant and "hot-swappable" including drives, power supplies, fans, AC power, host ports and controllers. Price
and Delivery FlashDisk OpenRAID Fibre Channel models are available in pedestal or rackmount configurations. In either configuration, a unit with 8 disk drives with 73.4 GB each stores 587.2 GB and is priced at $45,836 or under 8 cents per MB. Data center cabinets are available to house up to 9 rackmount units and a UPS. FlashDisk OpenRAID Fibre Channel disk arrays can be ordered now for delivery beginning in mid-April, 2001.
